Universe Room
The design brief was to create an area for children of all ages using an outer space or galaxy theme to create an engaging atmosphere that would feel inviting to enter and fun to be in. The space is of multipurpose use for games, teaching, live music, and also a more general purpose community room with the potential for different groups to book and use the space.
Colours for the walls doors ceiling etc were chosen together with the client. It was agreed that I would complete one large 3x4m mural on the left side wall, and a smaller 1mx2m approx mural on the opposite wall as this was a smaller area between two doors. The area behind the stage needed to be kept light to facilitate the use of a projector so we agreed that a view screen effect with a moon would fit the theme best.
I generally work in oil and watercolour but I had some previous experience with acrylic paint and spray cans and felt that this would be the best medium to use for the project. I familiarised myself with more spray can painting techniques following an online tutorial and produced a test piece that the client was very happy with.
I created a Pinterest board of similar ideas for interior spaceship, solar system or galaxy themed rooms. I also I collected some reference photos of planets and galaxies, mainly Hubble telescope pictures from NASA. I then proceeded to sketch up some rough designs for both the murals. The clients had given me more or less complete freedom within the theme, so once I was ready I started work on the two space murals.
The first stage was to cut templates of varying sizes to use with the spray paint. I also tested colours and decided which would help create a balance between bright colour yet still have a kind of harmony. I also had to measure and tape out the areas for the moon and the smaller “view screen” on the right side.
After I completed the smaller mural I started work on the second larger one. I also cut templates for spray painting dynamic lines along the entrance corridor and around the sound booth. The purpose being to add visual interest to a rather long corridor and create leading lines with would help direct movement into the main space.
We then had a group work day, where some volunteers of all ages came in to help. I had to divided up various tasks and assign them to whoever was most suited in that area. This helped speed on some of the process and also meant I had an extra pair of arms when needed to hold some of the larger templates in place.
Following that I finished off the large mural. I also added some texture to give a little dimensionality to the moon and finished the ‘panels’ around it. Overall the project did have some challenges but was highly enjoyable and stimulating. The clients were delighted and looking forward to being able to open up the space.
